Virtual Portrait Sessions – Good idea – or Not?

I have now done several two hour sessions, with the model posing in their own home and just appearing on my laptop screen. Here are some thoughts.

This is my fifth attempt at a virtual portrait.

My feelings on virtual sessions? Well, similar in many ways to working from a photograph. The lighting is not always as good as we would get it in a live session, but it does have the advantage that you can scrutinise the image on a computer screen far more closely than you would feel comfortable doing with a live model, and you are much closer than you would be working in a large group. Also I think perhaps you learn a lot as in gallery view in the breaks you see all the other participants’ work and hear the points being discussed by the tutor.

As you can see, the time frame doesn’t allow for a very finished piece of work.

I shall be very pleased to get back to the atmosphere of working with a “real” group of lively people again, but this has been an interesting experience.

Here are my first four efforts – a bit rough and ready, but fairly good likenesses achieved..
